Why do queer women smoke or drink?

I have noticed that more queer female friends drink or smoke compared to my straight female friends.  I thought it was more of a social habit, but I've read articles indicating that queer females, especially minorities, use alcohol and other drugs to cope with societal stress due to their sexual orientation.  There are also not many venues for queer females to socialize if not in clubs or bars.  What do you think?
